Cheltenham healthcare agency go extra mile for Sue Ryder

Ten members of staff from Retain Healthcare offices in Cheltenham and Swindon got together, virtually, to walk, cycle or run 277 miles in memory of Steve McHale from Gloucester, whose granddaughter Jazmine is a long standing member of the team.

Through their challenge the team have raised £600, which will be match funded by Retain Healthcare, to support Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, whose Sue Ryder nurses helped care for Steve at home.

Hannah Carter, recruitment media specialist at Retain Healthcare is the driving force behind the challenge. She said, "Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice supported Steve with end of life care at home when he needed it most. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when friends and family were unable to assist as they would normally have done, the teams at Sue Ryder were there.

"Steve was the beloved Grandad of Jazmine McHale, one of the long standing Recruitment and Retention Coordinators in the Cheltenham Branch of Retain Healthcare. We wanted to support Jazmine in her mission to raise money for this wonderful charity so they can continue their incredible work."

Jazmine added, "Fundraising for Sue Ryder is extremely important to me. They looked after and supported my grandad and I will always be so thankful for that. The work they do is amazing and so deserving of donations."

The healthcare recruitment agency has strong links to the hospice charity, regularly placing healthcare staff with Sue Ryder to help deliver its expert and compassionate palliative care services.

Hannah added, "We are really proud of Sue Ryder and our support of them. When the hospice needs healthcare staff we will work with them to try and get the right staff in place. It takes a really special person to work in palliative care. You need to be passionate, compassionate and empathetic.

"All of the staff we have placed with Sue Ryder have shared how much they really enjoy working there. They all tell us what an honour it to go in and support someone and their family at the end of their life."

"We are the largest provider of home from hospital services in the South West and during the pandemic we have been doing all we can to try and reduce the number of people in hospital beds right now, so we know much of a challenge Sue Ryder is facing. And we know how much of a challenge it has been for Sue Ryder against a huge drop in funds with fundraising events cancelled and their shops closed during multiple lockdowns during the pandemic.

"Sue Ryder is resource which is absolutely essential to our local community. During the pandemic Sue Ryder has really stepped up. Without the emotional and physical support Sue Ryder gives, so many people would be out on a limb. Losing a loved one is one of the most challenging things someone can go through, and it is even more so right now during the pandemic. That's why we wanted to do all we can to support of them."
